type='text'>Memorial Day

It's the start of a four day week-end The best beaches are always open in San Diego, back east Memorial Day was the official open of summer. When my then two year old daughter saw the ocean for the first time, exclaimed "The pool's open" will celebrate her nineteenth birthday at the beach. Wherever you celebrate this Memorial Day, take a free moment to say "Thank you" to those men and women and their families who sacrificed their all, so may we enjoy our freedom.
If you have a free hour, celebrate the life of our ancestors and relatives at Memorial Services all across the country, names will be read aloud. The Vietnam Veteran Memorial in Washington, DC where the names of 58,267 servicemen (and 8 women) are inscribed is an emotional shrine. Just a short distance from the wall are bronze statue of" The Three Soldiers" identified as White, African and Hispanic Americans. If you have a free day, The Vietnam Memorial created by local artist and world renowned bronze sculptor Tuan in Westminster, Calif. is unique. An American and a Vietnamese soldier stand side by side above the words Duty, Honor and Sacrifice. The American and South Vietnamese flag (6/2/1948-4/30/1975) wave in the wind behind them. Although the Fall of Saigon was 36 years ago, Tuan, vividly recalled the date 4/30/75. "I was eleven." he said. I did the math quickly in my head- he looks much younger that his years. I wondered was he one of the 500 thousand rescued by helicopter that day?Tuan lives in Orange County where (according to 2010 census,) 400 thousand Vietnamese descendants live. He must have a very large studio. The larger than life statue of Saint Therese of the Little Flower (my patron saint and namesake) must weigh a ton.He explained even hollow bronzes are very heavy. Yet Tuan's creations defy gravity, the one I referred to was attached by a foot to the pedestal. She appeared (on point and even had wings) almost weightless, uplifting visually and emotionally."That's the goal. he smiled.

"I got it.” I thought, although I didn't know his story at the time of the unveiling of "Humanity." I read the accompany poem, to get a hint of the inspiration behind the drape of his newest piece. Tuan says "writing" is the least thing he likes to do.

"My art speaks for itself" It is emotion for the eye. He finished "Humanity" four months ago, and is already thinking of the next piece, but it remains for thousands of college students as an inspiration piece to write essays. He wasn't revealing about what the project, only that he must do art- to live."Art is my passion" Tuan declares.

He has been following his passion since he was fifteen, but at the time I didn't or never will comprehend his circumstances. He was born into wealthy family but in a moment in time privilege turned to poverty and worse- imprisonment after an escape attempt failed. It was there he picked up modeling, literally. Tuan worked the clay from the dirt floor into the likenesses of those including his captures of a concentration camp with bare hands. Eventually his talent helped him come to America, ( boat refugee in 1989) and received formal art education in Pasadena. We are fortunate he did, as he is fortunate to reunite with his octogenarian father and hasn't children of his own, enjoys his sister and her children. Crisis builds character and genius and unites us all. "Humanity" will be on display at Monarch Galleries in La Jolla.

Take the day to reflect among the basic elements; earth, air, water, fire, wood and metal, and those who fight on foreign lands for the universal theme of freedom and democracy.

Champagne Snow on a Beer Budget

On St. Paddy’s Day the beer was green and dry as Champagne snow fell on the playground to the rich and famous .The morning after, I boarded a jet and stepped out into Aspen, where the core party was just getting started for the 11th annual Bud-light Spring Jam, two weekends in March 18-20 and 25-27. Broken Social Scene, winner of Best Alternative Artist and Album of the year, kicked off the first of three free concerts.

The third week in March brings spring, but because school schedules were scattered, I felt I had Aspen to myself. The top environmentally green mountains run in Colorado are Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands and Aspen Mountain, these plus Snowmass are connected by free buses. You can ski all four mountains with only one lift ticket. There are special deals on lift tickets, ski rentals, food and last minute lodging. Ajax, another name for the base of Aspen Mountain, is the place to people watch by day, but under the lights crowds watch in awe as top competitors jumped 40 feet at the annual Kick Aspen Big Air Event.

The air filled with music and cheer and the aroma of three college staples; beer, popcorn and pizza, which stimulated my appetite. We climbed the steps to the second story brick building of New York Pizza. I asked, Roger, the owner if he imported NY water.

“No” Roger replied proudly, It’s straight from the tap” We drank tap water and ate pizza by slices so big I folded mine over like a sandwich. They offered a variety of fresh vegetable and meat toppings fresh from the oven.

On a warm evening under a full mega moon the conditions were perfect for a walk along the meandering Rio Grande Trail. It was so quiet you could hear rush of the water and wild coyotes howl in the distance. Across the street is The Aspen Art Museum, opened daily, except Monday, admission is always free.

In the center of town, The Wheeler Opera House with gilded period detail and splendor of the 1880’s is world renowned. Art and Culture is the center of Aspen year round: symphonies, ballet, literary and comedic events. We listened to great comedians compete at the Laff Festival on a free night. Window shopping is always free at the Couture Houses; Gucci, Prada, Dior offer customers the best in the west and latest fashion, while consignment shops offer the best prices for past season clothing. Browsing the unique boutiques, upscale hotel gift shops and art galleries you will find good prices on luxury items and museum quality pieces; art, fur, jewelry and wine.
I walked into the atrium lobby of the Hotel Jerome in time for high tea. I sipped from a china cup while my eyes drank in the elegant wall coverings and the opulent antique furnishings. I couldn’t help but notice John Stamos’ look-a- like. He offered gift certificates to anyone with a valid driver’s license to take a test drive. I got off the settee, behind the wheel of a Lexus, and drove miles out of my comfort zone upon rugged terrain on Smuggler Mountain (popular uphill climb of the locals.)

High above the finery of town, I spied apparatus frozen in rust and ice and time, remnants of an abandoned ore and silver refinery and breathtaking mountaintop views.

My heart was pounding from the detour. The driver handed me a $30 gift certificate to be used at the hotel and adjoining J Bar and restaurant, he said “You earned it.” I slid out of the SUV and into a different era among the memorabilia lined walls of Boogie’s Diner.

Although it had been twenty years since I saw him, I recognized him in a Baltimore minute. You may remember the character Boogie in “The Diner.” 1982 movie, but I remember him as my boss (founder of Merry Go Round, once named Fortune 500 best places to work.) Aspenites honored Lenny “Boogie” Weinglass, just 72 hours prior, at a businessman’s luncheon at Jerome’s.

The Aspen Club & Spa is the second largest in Colorado. Inside the Art and Craft inspired building they offer weekend morning yoga classes to the public. This brought a sense of community and the instructor gave individual attention to all. Free/Donation suggested.

On Monday Night the Caribou Club served “The Deadliest Catch.” For only $45 a four course meal at one of the best private clubs in America. One catch: membership for the week will set you back $500. (Makes you wonder what the lifetime members paid.)

Little Annie’s, named after a mine, is famous for hamburgers and popular with locals and families for thirty-five years. Bud beer and a shot is still only $3.50. Suddenly I felt younger (or was it the after effect of tequila at high altitude) to toast my birthday on the first day of spring in Aspen.

A month into spring, on April 19th, seven inches of snow fell on the mountains. While there’s plenty fresh powder, conditions are better than ever for skiing, the talk of town has turned to new summer event. The Quizno’s Pro Challenge, 600 miles through the Colorado Rockies will be America’s equivalent of Tour de France is scheduled for August 22-28, 2011.
Give It A Whirl

For over three decades patrons have been expecting unique restaurants, upscale boutiques and one of-a-kind shops at Flower Hill Mall. In these economic times small business are coming and going like a revolving door, its here Tanya and Louis McKay Jr. chose to launch new business, Whirl Ballroom.

While ballroom isn’t new, it’s a new concept and the first ballroom in a mall setting. It's a step forward for all parties of concerned coastal community, couples, residents, mall merchants, owner and developer alike.

What was once two vacant shops is now a new open space with two walls of mirrored glass, a high ceiling and a warm wooden dance floor that invites patrons to give dance a whirl. McKay calculates for about the same cost and time of a movie, you can take a dance lesson. The placement of a hand on a back, light touch on the shoulder, eye contact help make people connect.

San Diego’s premiere Ballroom is tucked inside the Arts & Craft original facade, on the second level, Whirl would be at home on a New York City street corner, just like its now vacant mall neighbor. The Morrison Hotel Gallery owner Rich Horowitz cited low foot traffic as the reason The Morrison closed in Del Mar.

Will the mall’s newest shop have better luck?

McKay doesn’t believe in luck. “Things happen because you make them happen,” he said, although he also believes in being in the right place at the right time.

For McKay, Whirl fits in the Del Mar triangle, between Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe, as a place where all ages can kick back and kick up their heels any day or night of the week. It also fits with developer and owner Jeffery Essakow’s vision to make Flower Hill the center of the community.

Long before Starbucks, locals came to Pannikin, where McKay, wearing his Dance Arts logo shirt, struck up a conversation with Essakow. As they talked, they connected and as often the case more than coffee was put on the table. Essakow offered McKay an opportunity to open a new business in the mall.

But first, McKay needed to talk to his wife and business partner.

“Not on your life” was Tanya’s immediate response.

“We’re not ballroom people, but could recommend some.” Tanya told Essakow, but he apparently thought otherwise, recognizing in them the potential they see in others.

Dance Arts in Carmel Valley has a loyal following, and a three year wait list to train with them. Here they teach-ballet, jazz and tap for children and adults, even those barely old enough to tie their own tap shoes-with patience and enthusiasm.

At first meeting, Louis and Tanya, appear years younger. In their tiny office hangs a large portrait of the attractive middle aged couple with their four children. Off the studio, is a bright mural playroom, originally built for their youngest daughter, who today is in college and an accomplished dancer. On top of the large file cabinets are dozens of tiny framed portraits of their dance family, many old enough to enroll their own children.

The hallway connecting the studio to the office is covered with photographs signed by famous TV celebrities A personal note from Debbie Reynolds, who is still performing, reads “Louis you are a marvelous talent and like a second son to me.” They remain good friends today.

Louis McKay own parents know self-sacrifice. His mother gave up a Julliard scholarship to raise six children. Louis McKay, Sr., who lost his leg in combat, always claimed singing kept him alive in the foxholes as a marine during The World War II. His father's Purple Heart is proudly displayed in the office.

“Everything’s going to be great!” Tanya smiles, he always says that, but admits his positive attitude is his best quality that and his ease at talking to people.

However, when asked how he feels performing in front of an audience, the gregarious Louis was at a loss for words After an awkward silence, Tanya answered for him, offering a timeline of his life in the spotlight.

Tanya said, "I can't say how he feels," but Tanya describes Louis and the whole McKay clan as "a bunch of hams.”

Louis started singing in church at age six and joined his father at the San Diego Opera six years later. For eight years in his 20’s he shared the Broadway stage with Debbie Reynolds, in “Annie Get Your Gun,” and appeared on TV specials and variety shows. He also traveled the world before he opened his first dance studio 30 years ago.

Tanya follows Louis's lead, whether in dance, riding on back of his Harley, or starting a new adventure. Only after consulting, negotiating and reassessing their business model, together they decided "to go full out."

The McKays show no signs of slowing down. They teach dance everyday and are at Whirl three nights a week. Since they can’t be in two places at once, they hired loyal staff and interviewed a variety of instructors classical to modern trained, Now offering Tango, Swing, Salsa, Waltz, Zumba and more.

Their logical choice to host the adult social events is Lynn and Oscar Ortega. “We can’t wait to go to work at Whirl.” Lynn said cheerfully. “It’s a great diversion from their real estate jobs.” Dance has kept her positive even amid the real estate downturn she said not to mention petite, even with a dish of frozen yogurt, which melted as she chatted about herself.

“I’m a late bloomer. I didn’t dance until the age of 45," she said.

After her divorce rather than staying in and brooding, she drove herself downtown to dance.

She wasn’t a wallflower when Oscar, a dance champion, swept her off her feet, literally. Lynn, only 103 pounds, even then practiced lifts and won contests. Then she won Oscar’s heart.

As husband and wife, they use humor and fun to keep couples from stepping on each others toes and egos. They provide Latin and ballroom instruction from 7 -9 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There is a dance party from 8-10 pm on Friday, when you may bring your own bottle of wine, they bring the glasses. You won’t need special shoes, high heels are fine for women and for men leather soles, because rubber soles stick to the floor.

The high chairs and tables are at eye level to watch the dancers. Alabaster lights hang from the ceiling and cast a warm glow, but the glow upon the faces of the women when they “get it” is most rewarding for Lynn.

Over their desk hangs a handmade sign,” In each lesson in life there must be one who teaches love.” They want everyone to take a lesson.

The ballroom can be reserved for private parties to accommodate as many as 50 guests. A separate room is available and private lessons may be arranged. While geared towards adults, they encourage ages 9-17, and recently 6-8 year old to participate in all classes and train for competitions.

Whirl Ballroom 2670 Via de la Valle Suite A215 Del Mar, California 92014 (858) 350-9447 www.whirlballroom.com

Lightening Strikes Twice

Who doesn’t enjoy watching an electrifying performance?

Christopher Estrella was born with kinesthetic intelligence, good looks, kind heart and a whole lot of verve. Music and dance is a way of life, he’s danced with various dance troupes in San Diego. Just 25 years of age, Estrella is artistic director and founder of C-Star Producionz, and a lightening rod to showcase others talent.

Lightning strikes twice on the Mandeville’s Auditorium on UCSD campus for its second year, "All 4 U” San Diego's Best Talent and Dance Show, on February 20, 2010 from 7-9 pm.

Performances by: Unity, Majesty in Motion, One Nation , Kruciaal Element, Future Shock, Syde FX , Pride Rice Dance Crew, Ascension, Mt Carmel Dance Troupe, Super Galactic Beat Manipulators, Fusion & Static Soundtrack, Body Poets.

Choreographers: Mitchel Hills, Jaami Waali, Kobi Rozenfeld, Daniel Marshall, Justin Vaughn, Laurel Darcey, Vanessa Andrada, Chris Estrella, KJ Gonzales, David Stein

Estrella's inspiration and almost half of musical selection is a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Jackson’s bigger than life persona had a profound influence professionally and personally on him. Estrella went to his memoriam in LA and participated in Thrill the World, where he met other fans, like himself, who will join him in precision "Thriller" moves for his own dream come true.

It's sure to be a thrill for the audience as well, with signature M J moves, authentic costumes, laser lights and special effects. All the details that come with putting on such a monumental production is enough to make one loose sleep, but an important move towards the next level.

Estrella teaches dance to ages from 5 to 65. As all great teachers, he encourages students to stretch their muscles and challenge their minds. “Practice, practice, practice makes perfect” is his mantra. All that practice stretches his thin frame even thinner, as he runs to practice all over town.

I caught up with Estrella early Saturday morning practice session at beachside basketball court. For Estrella, an avid surfer, the beach must offer balance and a breath of fresh air after week long practices at gyms and studios.

"Chris likes kids, said his aunt, "he is good with kids.”

Ten years old boys, Austin, Ben and Declan agreed, “Dance is fun we like coming to class”.

“Hip hop is a good workout, my son works up a sweat.” even moms are getting into the act. “Me and my girlfriend attend adult classes elsewhere,”said mom to one of the boys.

Estrella discloses quietly his dream to “Share the love of dance and connect with all ages,” and part of his larger dream and to help other homeless youths. Portion of the events proceeds will benefit “Photo Charity” a shelter for ages 18-24, where they transition from at risk youths to productive adults by learning life skills in a safe place off the streets of San Diego.

Hip Hop benefits children and helps in learning and social skills throughout life.
Chris, true to his passion, welcomes all ages and levels to come to practice and perform along with the principal dancers.

Come watch them sizzle, snap, sparkle and pop!
"All 4 U” Saturday, February 20, 2010
7-9:00 pm (doors open 6:30) Location: Mandeville Auditorium UCSD 9500 Gilman Dr. La Jolla, CA 92039 For tickets go to HYPERLINK "http://WWW.CSTAPRODUCTIONZ.TICKETLEAP.COM" WWW.CSTAPRODUCTIONZ.TICKETLEAP.COM or call 888-241-0769

Photocharity go to HYPERLINK "http://www.photochairity.com" www.photochairity.com to learn more about how to help homeless youth.

Restaurant Week San Diego January 17-22

Why wait for cupid to strike his bow, during San Diego's Restaurant Week January 17-22, 180 of San Diego's most romantic and best restaurants aim to please. It was one of those exciting moments etched in the heart and minds of all who attended the Holiday Open House at Monarch Gallery in La Jolla, Calif. Where two world renowned artists Tuan and Arian were featured.

"Two Hearts Become One" was taken down and all celebrants whisked behind the velvet rope, where the artist signed Best Wishes for the handsome couple. What an appropriate gift for an anniversary, a vivid reminder of physical and spiritual love.

Both Tuan, sculptor and Arian master painter started at age 15 and dedicated their lives to their discipline. Decades creating bodies of work that evoke emotion and inspiration.Tuan poetry explains his art, while Arian is less revealing. He did point out the light from exhibit "Into the Light" represents the soul. I asked how does one paint the soul? His life was not long, but when he performed, he breathed fire.

.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 219px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_IAadb8gr5Zc/SvysVwB66eI/AAAAAAAAAEw/5-6DCN4ULbs/s320/this-is-it-movie-poster.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403383142607940066" />

Michael Jackson snaps and crackles, The King of Pop, as he takes his mark on stage. This Is It, takes us behind the cameras, the lights, the action for two electrifying and expertly edited hours of rehearsal. Isn't it the practice and the process that is most revealing and rewarding. The discipline and fun that goes into the phrase," Let’s do it one more time" is music to my dancer's legs and other body parts seated in the theater. That’s why we practice, not to make perfect, but to make changes and get it right, before the final curtain. There isn't another performer who can touch him with a white glove. The film has reached the 200 million mark in two weeks and will extend through Thanksgiving.

Jack Johnson "En Concert" documentary is in theaters for a limited time. Unlike Jackson who was always on stage, Johnson is a reluctant to be there. His props are his guitar and surfboard and his backdrop low tech.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IAadb8gr5Zc/Svy1qecfufI/AAAAAAAAAFA/oRd_ndHu-IY/s320/enconcert.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403393394269469170" />

The sky's star power comes from cell phones and lighters. Thus documentaries are as different as night and day, but the theme is simply the same. L O V E. Love your brother, your mother and the earth is the message and core of their music. Only sad note, one of the three Wilson brothers, all musical genius' is still alive. However, their cousin Mike Love and Bruce Johnston (member 1965 to present) led the Beach Boys and sound true to the original vocal harmonies that made them unique back in 1961. To which I asked my new friend and driver, Louise, not her real name,

"Can you get me back safely by 2:30?"We made our getaway, and made it back in time to meet the school bus, without a minute to spare.

As we outgrow girlhood and move into different neighborhoods, we take on many traditional caregiver roles; wife, mother, mentor. It’s important we hold on to those old girlfriends and make new fast friends. Think Thelma and Louise and hold on to her tight.

Geena Davis Thelma herself, acclaimed actress, warmly greeted her girlfriends and former neighbors exactly two years ago, made an encore performance at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara, to a group of 300 women leaders from Fortune 500 companies. There really hasn't been much change, but change comes slow. If we change the way media represents women, we can change the world.

Davis raised awareness as she attempted to raise the microphone to accommodate her statuesque six foot frame. It wasn’t always a laughing matter; to be taller than the boys, to be smarter than the boys. As a Mensa member, she’s smarter than 98% of the population. Almost as an apology for possessing beauty brains and a perfect figure she developed a sense of humor, which runs in the family.

Her husband, Dr. Reza Jarrahy (means surgery in Persian) was destined to become a pediatric cranial facial surgeon, for those other than the upper 2% of the population that means cosmetic surgery on children's skull and face. They have three children, the eldest a daughter age 7 and fraternal five year old twins boys. Together they watch animated and family movies. Even among the best of the genre, it doesn’t take a genius to know that there are fewer heroines than heroes and many are gender stereotypes.

However it did take a heroine not only prove, but improve gender balance. Davis sponsored research at USC’s Annenberg School of Communication. The results were published over a year and a half and Geena Davis founded See Jane Los Angeles, an outreach project. With a raised conscious effort on all our parts; parents, teachers entertainment creators can reach new heights of awareness, so all children can grow up tall in themselves, head and shoulders held high.

She as all conscientious mothers are, is rightly concerned how our children must see themselves, or even worse do not see themselves. For example there are three males to one female on average in the top rated G-rated movies 1990 -2005. As her children outgrow preschool and as a mentor, Davis wants the media to reflect the way we value our sons and daughters, wives and husbands, brothers and sisters, and of course our best friends.

Davis wants this so much so she offered her time, talents and resources towards more education and research in media. With the exception of one grant from Nickelodeon, there hasn't been much funding to look at woman representation in film. However, Dr. Martha Lauzen (The Celluloid Ceiling) provides a wealth of statistics on women working in front and behind the camera. She and her team research and educate at the Center for Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State U.

Put your purse into it, buy tickets to a chick flick and for support take a friend. Check listings at a theater near you.

http://www.thegeenadavisinstitute.org/

Baseball Has Been Good to Me

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_IAadb8gr5Zc/Sw4MOC3MiiI/AAAAAAAAAFI/oqKT7Kkza4c/s320/IMG_0501cropped.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408273637944625698" />
Not only the faces and places changed since the first recorded game took place on 6/12/1839 in a cow pasture on Cooperstown, so has the season.

Long past the traditional opening day, September 26, 2009 opens for the Miracle League of San Diego. Saturday throughout the fall come to the watch America's favorite pastime and see the faces of children with mental and physical challenges in a league of their own at San Dieguito Park. At a cost million dollars, athletes often passed over, some in mobility devices, glide over smooth bases. To play the game to the best of their ability, without obstacles is priceless. Teamed with a typical peer buddy the seeds of empathy grow to compassion upon the field of the kindest, safest surface. Friendships grow that can last all the seasons of our lives and into the next century.

The Miracle League of San Diego is a dream come true for Sue and Dan Engles and all the children and thier biggest fans.

http://www.miracleleagueofsandiego.org/

September 13-18 Restaurant Week in San Diego

It may not be an anniversary, birthday or corporate event , but there is a reason to celebrate by going to out to eat the meal you have been savoring up for. By day, the “stairway to the stars” is open to the public, the freight elevator operates three times daily, which may have been disappointing for second time visitor, Margot Miles, 90 years young, who came 5,600 elevation (not exactly what ER doc meant by keep feet elevated) to see the telescope again before she died. Having been here a first time with the man she married in ’68, forty years ago. Not wanting to disappoint, Superintendent, Dan McKena, invited the group for an unscheduled “Behind the Scenes” tour. “Only if you promise to do what I say”, My impression was he wasn’t joking, after he explained the mechanics that keep the original six million dollar telescope well oiled and working with the same precision of a Swiss Watch.

Exploring the stars above or the earth below revitalizes our spirit. The first Saturday in September, it’s a “must” (translated young wine) an earthy tradition at the beginning of the grape harvest, and cause for celebration. Wine making is in my peasant’s blood. My great-grandfather filled two 50 gallon barrels (allowable annual amount per family use) to accompany great- grandmother’s homemade pasta and tomato sauce. His best kept secret recipes from the hilly countryside of their ancestral home of Naples was passed onto my grandfather, who was first to be born in America. He proudly offered me a sip of Italian Vino from the big jug. What a disappointment; not at all like Welch’s. I have since acquired a taste for dry, just a hint of fruity red and whites. Harford Wineries, not far from the MA & PA trail, has earned awards, despite Maryland’s cold. All across America, every state, even Alaska bottles their own wine, but the California sun and dry climate produces some of the best grapes that go into the new and world’s best wines, stem from an ancient Roman tradition

Come sample wines grown near the historic town of Julian-also known for another American temptation-appie pie. The first Apple Day celebrates one hundred years, but in order to satisfy San Diego's appetite for fresh pies apples are shipped to Julian and pies are shipped out to bakeries-some sell 1,000 pies daily. Over the next few months the apples are ripe for the self-picking. The fresh autumn harvest makes for La Dolce Vita.

The event is hosted at the Menghini Winery
to benefit the Julian Chamber of Commerce, Main Street, Julian CA 92036 (760)765-207

Miramar Marine Corps Air Station Open Cockpit Days

Take your kids and your camera to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum to Open Cockpit Days, every other weekend during summer ending Sept 5 and 6. It’s free!

The grounds are packed with twenty-five vintage aircraft, while inside it’s packed from floor to ceiling with rare artifacts from WW I up to the present. Memorabilia collected from every era of aviation is on display in the small galleries. One must see room is dedicated to the ‘History of Women in the Marine Corps’ and is the only such room in the US .

Expect to meet friendly and knowledgeable volunteers, such as John Archer, who proudly introduced me to a helicopter hero, Richard Toettcher (call-sign “Touch”), who served two tours (’66 and ’68) in Vietnam . “Touch” is the real deal. Although reluctant to talk about himself, he eagerly answered questions about the F-5 Tiger, down to the last decal, as he helped everyone safely into the cock pit.

Another exciting photo opportunity for us civilians is the F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet, immortalized by the Blue Angels. Also of international interest stands the CH-46 Sea Knight, the helicopter used to carry cargo and passengers in the Viet Nam war and was the final marine aircraft to leave Viet Nam . It evacuated several thousand refugees and the American Ambassador during the fall of Saigon , on April 30, 1975 , thus ending our involvement-as a new day dawned.

Come and honor the brave men and women behind the machines-whose loyalty spreads as wide as the sky that is at their command. He was classically trained an accomplished musician, sound engineer and music producer before he recorded Woodstock. His exhibit, The Other Side of the Glass, was presented at the opening of the newest Morrison Hotel Gallery in the Flower Hill Promenade. The legendary Kramer shared stories of Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Traffic and the Beatles inside the London studio and from Woodstock stage. High above the quagmire helicopters shuttled performers back and forth. Below the stage, where rats (he emphasized New York sized) ran to and fro. They slept for two hours, like parents to a new born, awake and alert and eager to capture their baby’s firsts for days on end. The best was sent out into the world with fingers crossed, not knowing their fate. It was a daunting task, with wonderfully raw results. Kramer said “It’s a miracle Woodstock was recorded at all.” Kramer recorded onsite with limited equipment (only 12 outputs and 8 inputs for techies) and under primitive conditions.

Three days of peace and love and drugs and hope cumulated with the visionary Jimi Hendrix, who hit all the right chords. I listened to his rendition of The Star Spangled Banner with my heart clutched and head bowed. Lest we forget, our beloved brother, who died too soon, heroes of Woodstock nation and war heroes, who weren’t welcome or never came home a long time gone.

Many parents forbade their children to go off to Woodstock. Mine wouldn’t even allow the next best thing. The double album set, because of one word, was buried in their basement for forty years. Mr. Kramer was astonished to see one vinyl still wrapped in the protective cellophane survived without a scratch. In his cool paternal voice, “You must not play it”. He honored me with his autograph, where the cellophane lifted from the edge. I believe he is comfortable there. Individuals are born genius, but it is the collaborative effort that pushes musician’s personalities and their instruments to the edge of their craft.

Music is not a solitary sport, whether an audience of two or full stadium the feedback produces something never possible in separate rooms. The coming together at Woodstock was a magical moment in history. Come to The Morrison Hotel Galleries to experience fine art photography as famous as the photographers and musicians who produce them. The newest location:

Morrison Hotel Galleries
2670 Via De LA Valle
Del Mar, CA 92104 tel. 858 350-3777.

1969 NASA put a man on the moon, yet taped over the Apollo’s original transmission video; I did it to my cousins wedding video, just too embarrassed to admit it. Kramer recorded onsite from the stage with limited equipment (only 12 inputs and 8 outputs for techies) and under primitive conditions” It’s a miracle Woodstock event was recorded at all,” recalls Kramer.

The newest release includes never seen before footage, includes Hendrix’s stand out performances of Star Spangled Banner, among heroes of Woodstock , many who left us too soon. As well as some 2nd generation musicians, who came back to replay instruments not picked up by the mike, an improvement to the sound quality. I relived the event, in the comfort of my own family room on a 57 inch HD screen with surround sound with the blu-ray release of Woodstock with my reluctant teenager, for almost four hours, mesmerized.

I wasn’t offended by the four letter word, but the three letter word I was reluctant to use, was ART, referring to auto destructive kind. Peter Townshend, a student of Gustav Metzger. Townshend smashed his Les Paul; Gibson SG, guitar on the Woodstock stage, another first in rock to do so. Incidently the broken instrument was also kept in a basement for forty years. I wonder what it sold for at auction in London?

http://www.morrisonhotelgallery.com/default.aspx

Taylor Guitar offers free tours of their El Cajon factory, where the past and present meet. Computer laths and lasers combined with human hands turn lumber yards of wood into a works of art and music for generations to enjoy. The saddest note came when our tour guide told us Les Paul, who invented multi track recording and developed the electric guitar that adorns his name died. A light passed over an agitated elderly gentleman face upon mention of his name and he remembered his wife’s name. Mary Ford and Les Paul are together in peace again and making music.

http://www.taylorguitars.com/
